An Empty Throne
The Living and the Dead
Although most mortals understand that their world has entered an Apocalypse few understood the scope of the cataclysm until the dead began returning to unlife. More than merely the work of some few necromancers – or even a nation of powerful casters. For reasons unknown which remain clouded in mystery every mortal creature is at risk of returning to a semblance of life. Rather than inspiring horror in and of itself the condition has become a matter of policy. There are no longer public grave sites containing whole bodies of the dead instead there are mausoleums where a town or cities sacred dead may be visited after government mandated cremation. Thankfully the amount of time a creature may be afflicted tends to be within a predictable time line. The reported incident of return is far higher than the actuality, however the opportunity of dreadful risk is all too possible. Certain techniques may be used to ensure the lack of return with varying results. Total consumption of the body with fire being the most reliable method. Although there is the belief that incorporeal undead may haunt an object or place these are almost always unsubstantiated rumors.
intrigue over Outright War.
In this new world bitter fights over resources remains constant but the method has become ones waged with intrigue rather than massive unending violence. In war the wounded have as much potential to be deadly to a nation by dying than the economic attrition of living – with the inclusion of the possibility of undeath. However the reward for new resources is great enough that the cost of eliminating the unliving is assumed in the cost of war. For the common man the benefit of becoming a soldier is strong enough in limited years of service that the risk of death is palatable. A person volunteering to become a soldier can change the caste into which they are born, the resources earned may outweigh the risks taken, and other opportunities are life long. Then there are those who draw a living’ via war and combat as more long term strategy these individuals wield a force of intimidation of both certain death and uncertain undeath.
